Having a cold is certainly no fun and when you’re pregnant it’s even worse. You’re probably already feeling like poo due to the morning sickness or swelling and then, because of everything that is going on with your body, having a cold makes everything feel ten times worse.

One of the first things they tell you is that while you are pregnant, your body will go through a lot of changes. One of the changes that happens is that your immune system suppresses itself making it easier for you to catch a cold.

While having your immune system suppressed may sound bad, it is actually a good thing for you because it is helping to protect your little bundle of joy as he or she is growing. So even if you do catch a cold, the womb is helping protect your baby and keeping him or her safe from those nasty cold bugs.

But still, a cold is super annoying and you don’t want to deal with that if you don’t have to. 

Luckily, there are safe ways to treat a cold, even when you are pregnant.  Today I want to share with you some of the best home remedies for cold during pregnancy that are easy on the tummy and the wallet.

Home remedies for cold during pregnancy 

1. Rest

Getting rest is a must whether you are pregnant or not. You need to keep yourself well rested so that your body can help fight back against the virus. 

Pro Tip: If you are having trouble getting some sleep, you can try elevating your head while you lay down to help open up your nasal passages, making it a little easier to breathe.

 

Still, sleep can be tricky when you’re pregnant, especially the bigger your belly bump becomes. It’s hard to find the right position and you end up tossing and turning the majority of the night trying to get comfortable. 

That’s the opposite of well rested! If you haven’t already, you should seriously consider getting one of these. Not only will it allow you to sleep more comfortably and get rest, but you can use it to help with positioning once the baby arrives. It was most certainly the best money I spent during my pregnancy. 

After all of this, if you’re still having trouble getting rest, try drinking warm water with a few drops of honey right before bed. The News Funnel swears by it!

 

2. Get In Your Vitamin C

This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard about the health benefits of Vitamin C, especially when dealing with a cold. Vitamin C is known to help boost your immune system and it’s easy to add into your diet. You can try eating different citrus type fruits like oranges and even strawberries or simply drinking orange juice. 

The boost of Vitamin C you’ll receive by doing this will go a long way in helping your body fight off the cold. 

Keep in mind this isn’t a suggestion to take extra Vitamin C or to supplement with pills. That’s not necessary and as with anything, there is a such thing as too much.

According to Baby Center, the recommended amount of Vitamin C for a pregnant woman is 85 mg a day and no more than 2,000 mg a day. You’ll definitely achieve the minimum with your prenatal vitamins and eating fruits!

 

3. Drink Warm Beverages

Warm drinks can work wonders when you’re feeling under the weather. Things like broth or warm tea will help soothe an itchy throat and help relieve inflammation. Water is also important to help keep your body hydrated.

We talked about using honey to get rest but did you know that honey does even more? Honey is a well known cough suppressant and studies have shown that it has antimicrobial properties. This has earned it the reputation of beating out some bacteria and viruses, the common cold included. Just add a little honey in your warm tea to help keep down on the coughing. Don’t forget to gargle with salt water too as it also soothes sore throats and a dry cough. 

 

4. Hot and Cold Packs

You’ve probably heard of using heat or coldness to help relieve inflammation and pain. But did you know these can come in handy when it comes to opening up your sinuses or relieving any pain that is caused by the cold.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to get anything fancy. A simple bag of frozen peas or damp washcloth warmed in the microwave can do the trick. 

 

5. Medications

The hope is to try and do everything naturally but there is a time when over the counter medications are necessary. And this is where it can get tricky.

Why?

There are only certain types of meds that you can take when you are pregnant so that your unborn baby isn’t harmed. Before you take any type of over the counter medicine, you will want to be sure to talk with your OBGYN (doctor) first. This includes herbs and any other supplements. You can never be too careful. 

Generally, medications like Tylenol and saline drops are safe to take after you have reached the 12-week milestone. There are also a few over the counter cold and cough medications you can take but you will of course want to talk to your doctor about which ones are safe.

Natural Cold Remedies While Pregnant 

These are just a few safe ways to treat a cold while you’re pregnant. Remember, with any cold, you are basically relieving the symptoms while the virus is running its course.

Keep in mind that your doctor can provide you with a list of medications that are safe for both you and the baby developing inside of you. They can also help by giving you advice on how to decrease or treat your symptoms. That’s why it is so important to speak with them before you try any cold remedies.
